Welcome to Mitzvah Day 2021 / 5782

With the pandemic still a threat, Mitzvah Day continues to evolve. Introducing: Mitzvah Day, Hybrid edition! This year the USH Mitzvah Day event will provide both in-person activities and other opportunities to make a difference in our community.  Information about this year's projects can be found in an insert in the Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur mahzor, on the postcard you received in the mail with High Holiday information, and in a link in the Shabbat announcements.

For all the details on our 2021 projects, please see the chart below!

Please note:  This year, our in-person volunteer opportunities are only for people who are vaccinated.  Masks must be worn to participate in all projects that will take place in the synagogue.  We hope to resume our special Mitzvah Day projects for kids of all ages on Mitzvah Day 2022!

There are several opportunities to help our neighbors in a contactless, safe way.

  1. The Hoboken Emergency Food Pantry has an online wish list to order food and diapers that will be delivered to their door.   Click here for Emergency Food Pantry wish list
  2. The Food Pantry is also collecting school-appropriate autumn and winter clothing for 53 children of client families. Some of these families were underemployed and not eligible for unemployment payments during the pandemic. Some are undocumented with few options. Most are living with relatives in intergenerational households; some have been relocated due to domestic abuse situations; and some children and families have health issues destablizing them during the pandemic. In addition, several of the babies were unexpectedly placed with family caregivers by Child Protective Services. Please see our list below to support specific children -- and please do not donate summer clothing.  In addition, general children's clothing donations (autumn & winter clothing only) are welcome, and the Kids Clothing Bank specifically needs: snowsuits & kids winter jackets and snowboots; boys' clothing sizes 2,5,6,10,12; girls' clothing sizes 7,8,10,12; sneakers all sizes for adults and children.
  3. USH will deliver meals to the Hoboken Shelter’s 80 clients on a specific day. Our donation will also help a city restaurant, which will prepare and deliver the meals in a contactless, safe way.  A donation of $10 will provide a meal for one person. Click here to make a donation to buy a meal
  4. Donate mini-toiletries to create personal hygiene kits for clients of the Hoboken Shelter. These can be purchased at CVS or Bed, Bath and Beyond, or on Amazon. More than 1,000 people shower at the Shelter each week.
