United Synagogue of Hoboken is an informal and welcoming community devoted to the renewal of vibrant Jewish life in the urban waterfront towns of Hudson County, New Jersey. Some bring a strong Jewish background; others seek to reconnect or encounter Judaism for the first time. While our vitality is especially evident in the presence of young families, our inclusive approach appeals to people of all ages. Everyone is encouraged to become involved in community life and leadership. Individuals quickly feel at home.
Where We Come From
We are the successors of a Hoboken immigrant community that formed a congregation in 1905, and ten years later completed construction of its shul, the Star of Israel.
During the 1920s, a group of congregants purchased a townhouse at 830 Hudson Street, and converted it into the Hoboken Jewish Center. In 1946, as the local economy declined and people moved to the suburbs following World War II, the Hoboken Jewish Center and the Star of Israel congregations recombined to form United Synagogue of Hoboken.
Revitalization began in the 1970s, when Jews were among a new generation of residents attracted by Hoboken’s brownstones, waterfront, and proximity to New York City. In 1997, we sold the townhouse at 830 Hudson Street to help fund construction of the Kaplan Building, which houses our Learning Center and Preschool.
Today, United Synagogue of Hoboken is the center of local Jewish spiritual and cultural life.
