women's rosh hodesh
The United Synagogue of Hoboken has a very active Rosh Hodesh group which meets frequently. Meetings are held in the members' homes. We usually have some good stuff to eat and drink, since we firmly believe it is impossible to have a meaningful discussion about anything without a little something to nosh on.
The topics we have discussed over the past couple of years range from the meaning of Kaballah in the life of a Jewish feminist, to readings of stories and poems written by victims of the Holocaust, to talking about the peculiar and familiar responses of Jewish women to food. We celebrate the new brides once a year, and the new or impending babies once year -- good advice is passed around generously. We read books, we watch movies, we watch special TV films -- we talk about anything and everything!
We welcome any woman to join us. If you have a topic you are fervent about, please let us join you in your search and discovery. You don't have to have a meeting at your house if you don't want to; you don't have to say anything if you don't feel moved to do so. You'll find a group of interesting women of all ages, all occupations, all backgrounds and experiences, bound together by their search for the meaning of Judaism and feminism in their lives.
Rosh Hodesh is on vacation during summer. We usually do something very special during the High Holidays. We have a women's seder every year right before Passover when we use a special Haggadah. Click here to obtain a copy: Rosh Hodesh Haggadah
The Haggadah is available in PDF format. If your browser does not open them automatically, please download the free Adobe Reader.
